Register a Domain Name at a Reasonable Price
If you wish to set up a website, this means that you require a domain. A domain is an easy-to-remember name that you write in your web browser's address bar when you wish to pay a visit to a specific web page.
Why Do You Require a Domain?
This is an issue I introduce because a week ago my boss brought forth the idea of launching a web page for our brand new venture. That itself is not an issue, the issue is that he needs a website, but has not reached a decision yet about what it should look like, what it should encompass, and so on. All that he told me was the name of the website - its domain name. So, we now have a web address for a yet-to-be-set-up web site and nothing else.
Each web site is located on a physical server. That physical server has its own physical address, popular also as an Internet Protocol address. Visiting a website by typing the Internet Protocol address of the server in your web browser, however, is not the best and most convenient thing to do, so that was how and why domains came into existence. Therefore, a domain name pertains to an IP address on the Internet. Once it has been registered, of course.
Registering a Domain Name
To register a cheap domain name, you first have to pick a domain registrar. NTCHosting has the best solution for my present and prospective projects - they have a Domain Manager package, which can be easily upgraded to a hosting plan later on - when my boss eventually makes up his mind about what function the site will have.
Thus, to register a domain name, you need to select a name for your website. Next, you have to select a top-level domain name - this is what comes after the dot. For example, in 'download.com', '.com' is the Top-Level Domain (TLD). Obviously, '.com' signifies 'company', '.net' signifies 'network', '.org' signifies 'organization', and so on and so forth.
After you've selected your domain and your future domain registrar, you need to find out whether the domain name you wish to register is free, since someone else might have taken it already, however unpleasant this might be. Each domain registrar company, including NTCHosting, offers a tool at their sign-up page, which confirms the availability of a particular domain. To go on with the registration of a domain, you have to fill out certain domain registrant information - the name, the physical address, the email and the phone number of the registrant of the domain name.
You've Registered a Domain Name... Now What?
I registered .com, .net, .eu and .org domains for our venture, according to the wish of my still-uncertain-about-the-purpose-of-the-future-site boss. I tried out the domain administration interface NTCHosting is offering and found it very intuitive - everything is neatly organized and, from what I saw in the web hosting Control Panel demo at their site, after we upgrade to a cheap web hosting plan, it will stay the same, but with a lot more features. This, thank God, will save me quite a lot of discomfort from having to manage my domain name and web site hosting account separately. So, while waiting for the boss to determine at least what the website should include, I was pleased to find that the domain name administration tool contains DNS management and domain name renewal options, and - a very handy functionality (!) - a parked domain name template, which I resorted to in order to set up a "Coming Soon" page for our domain names.
Country-Specific Top-Level Domains
I was pretty happy to discover that NTCHosting is offering a lot of country-code TLDs, since the project the website is intended for is international. Country-code Top-Level Domains are handed over to national registry operators, which permit domain name registration providers to register cheap domains, usually at prices that are lower than those offered to the end clients. There are various country-specific domains: .co.uk for the United Kingdom, .it for Italy, .es for Spain, .us for the USA, .ca for Canada, .com.au for Australia, etc. This, I am confident, will please my boss since we will be able to build a local version of the website for each country where the project will be introduced.
